Test Engineer

SMP sells its products primarily to automotive aftermarket retailers, program distribution groups, warehouse distributors, original equipment manufacturers, and original equipment service part operations in the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, Mexico, and other Latin American countries.

The FTC Test Engineer has a primary responsibility to inspect, review, research, test and approve new product in accordance with FTC product validation process. This function requires collaborate with FTC Product Department. Understanding of OE versus Aftermarket automobile parts production standards in order to develop and manage test plans, identifying, qualifying, and developing long term relationships with competent manufacturing partners. In addition, this responsibility includes thinking critically of the product approval process in order to continuously improve it.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

  • Inspect, review, research, test and approve new product in accordance with SMP and FTC new product validation process.
  • Perform lab testing and on vehicle testing, if necessary, prior to approve new product for SMP Mexico and FTC. This implies additional administrative and technical training, developing new test fixtures and developing direct relation with SMP engineering, other test facilities, technicians and automobile repair facilities.
  • Complete the necessary testing in the given timeframe.Β  Manage test requests, priorities and schedules with excellent communication between multiple groups.
  • Finalize documentation for final product approval for FTC and SMP Mexico.
  • Help and assist team members on SMP new product development and testing.Β  (on vehicle testing components)
  • Challenge the status quo test methods. Create new, more efficient ways to gather information that will support product development and product approval.
  • Evaluate FTC’s product approval process for continuous improvements in data quality, speed and efficiency. This involves continuing education and/or training.Β 
  • Work with others, suppliers, Product Department, vendors, marketing, and manufacturing using a Design Verification Plan (DVP) and the applicable standards/test methods, to develop a comprehensive test plan. The plan will contain all necessary data collection to efficiently design a product and approve it for production.
  • Participate in FTC Mexico events to know the market and improve the product approval process.
  • Test parts are based on customer requests and our internal quality control process.
  • Manage Product Alerts (Receive, process, and promptly respond to product alerts)

Requirements/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree, trade school certification or military MOS in Electrical & Electronic Engineering technology
  • In-depth knowledge in electronics and skill set.Β 
  • Lab test and test documentation experience.
  • Thoroughly familiar with all test safety protocols and procedures as testing involves lethal voltages.
  • Ability to work unsupervised and schedule time accordingly.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to use mechanic hand tools is required.
  • Ability to perform manual labor involved with on vehicle testing is mandatory.
  • Must be proficient in MS Outlook, Excel, Word, Tektronix software and basic data acquisition software.
  • OBD2 and CAN bus familiarity is an advantage.
  • Minimum 2 years electronic testing and troubleshooting experience.
  • Experience in automotive or related industry is a plus.
  • Must have a valid Florida driver’s license.

  • Must be able to walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel, and crouch.
  • Use visual acuity required for depth perception and color perception.
  • Must be able to visually inspect small defects and/or small parts
  • Use a variety of measuring devices
  • Operate machines, motor vehicles, hand tools, and job specific equipment and tools
